The most exciting part of being in the Custom Sock Shop family is our responsibility to push the creative boundaries of sock art. We’re always exploring innovative and thought-provoking aesthetics in the world of socks, and it’s always exciting to see a new custom sock cannon come into existence, such as the popular “sock covers” meme inspired by London photographer, Thom Moore. In his project, Famous Album Covers Recreated With My Socks, Moore puts a new spin on the art of custom sock design by recreating famous record album covers using only the contents of his sock drawer.
For this series of classic, cool and sometimes even cute photos, Moore dips into his sock drawer to remake the images of iconic music album covers such as The Velvet Underground’s banana (Andy Warhol), Pink Floyd’s triangle prism (The Dark Side of the Moon), and whatever that screaming monster thing is on The Rolling Stones’ Voodoo Lounge. The entire collection can be viewed on Tumblr.
Famous Album Covers Recreated With My Socks began nearly two years ago, and Moore continues to produce more quirky, creative and timely sock art to this day. The most recent additions to the collection are Michael Jackson’s Bad and a very special piece made just for the 2014 Shang-Hi Olympics: Sock-Hi 2014.
Fans of Moore’s work are making their own custom sock album covers and posting them online, too. UK music news magazine NME has compiled a pretty good roundup of custom sock fan album art and even contributed one themselves (paying tribute to The Beatle’s Abby Road, naturally). Not a bad way to get a second use out of a dirty pair of socks!
