Basketball season is quickly approaching! Follow these steps to get prepared and perform your best on game day.
Step 1: Set Goals for the Season
Write a list of personal goals you hope to achieve by the end of the season. Write your goals down so you can reference them throughout the season. Be specific about what you plan to achieve this season and be realistic. For instance, your goals might include:
• Score 6 points per game
• Make 70% of my free throw shots
• Play solid defense
• Be a team player on offense
• Maintain a positive attitude during games and practice.
Refer to your goals before practice and games and use them to motivate your performance. When the season ends, reflect on your goals and make plans for next year.
Step 2: Prep Your Closet and Gym Bag
Preparing for the season means having the gear you need for practice and game day. Prevent injuries by purchasing shoes that can withstand the running and jumping you will do. Don’t forget about your socks either. Socks can protect your legs and feet from swelling, contain extra padding to absorb shock when jumping, and keep the feet dry. You may also want to wear an undergarment under your jersey to absorb sweat.
Show your team pride with customized basketball socks, t-shirts, and sweatpants. Add your team’s colors and logo to look professional and feel confident on game day.
Step 3: Plan Your Offense and Defense
Before game day, know your teams plays. Determine the best strategy to move the ball and score points. Since a good offense can be stopped by an effective defense, knowing the players on the opposing team is key to your success. Identify your opponent’s best shooter, ball handler, and rebounder and decide whether to play a zone or man-to-man defense.
Step 4: Practice Makes Perfect
Practice is crucial. Improve your free throw percentages by doing what the professionals do – shooting at least 100-300 free throw per day! Practice dribbling, passing, and lay-ups too. Don’t have a basketball hoop at home? Find local parks in your area where you can practice.
Step 5: Manage Your Time
Once the season begins, your schedule will quickly fill up. Keeping a planner is a great way to manage your time. Mark your calendar with the dates and times of games and practices. Since you will be spending a great deal of time playing basketball, set aside time to spend with family and friends, get homework done, and get some rest. Planning ahead will allow you to keep your head in the game and not worry about making time for other things.
